ABSTRACT The costs associated with corrosion in industrialized nations are large. In 1985 in the United States alone, the cost was estimated at 180 billion dollars (Latanisian 1987). Anything that can reduce that expense is beneficial to economic development. The use of chemical corrosion inhibitors is one method to reduce the costs associated with corrosion. This section describes several of the common methods that can be used to monitor corrosion and to evaluate corrosion inhibitors. It also summarizes the corrosion studies being performed in the author’s laboratory.
