Interaction between transition metal ions and carbohydrates were highly site- and/or anomer-specific to the hydroxyl sequences of carbohydrates. Photo-induced oxidation of monosaccharides and sugar moieties of nucleosides in the presence of transition metal ions showed high site-selectivity and was interpreted in terms of the site-specificity of the interaction.
