ABSTRACT

Apomixis is an asexual mode of reproduction through the seed and is a genetically controlled process that bypasses female meiosis and fertilization to produce seed identical to the maternal parent. Isolation of genes controlling apomixis would be useful to plant breeders for fixing hybrid vigor and reducing costs related to hybrid seed production. Attempts are underway to locate and transfer genes conferring diplosporous apomixis from Tripsacum to maize. This contribution provides a general overview on the potential applications of apomictic systems in cereals as well as a review of the past and present research accomplishments relative to the development of an apomictic maize.
