ABSTRACT

A forest-fire model is presented which is a computer model for excitable media including spreading of deseases. Depending on the parameters, the model shows spiral-shaped fire fronts, a percolation-like phase transition above which the fire is extinguished, or a self-organized critical state with forests and fires of all sizes. We explain the origin of all these phenomena and discuss possible applications in chemistry, biology, and medicine.
