ABSTRACT This paper reports the most recent findings on crystal growth and dissolution of two quartz-like materials: berlinite, AIPO4, and gallium phosphate, GaPO4. The study first investigates crystal growth conditions in acid media, and then demonstrates the feasibility of large high quality crystals. The crystalline quality was confirmed by X-ray topography, the small -OH content by infrared spectrometry. Y-rotated resonators were electrically measured to determine the Q factor, coupling coefficient and temperature coefficients. Given that crystal growth and dissolution are dependent on the same reversible process the second part of the study investigates the crystal dissolution of these quartz-like materials. Good controlled dissolution is vital for high frequency device purposes.
