ABSTRACT

The single crystals of MeC (Me = Ti, Nb, Ta) were grown using Ni metal as a flux at soaking temperatures of 1400 to 1900 °C and at compositions of 12.5 to 35 wt% flux. The maximum sizes of the crystals were around 1.5 to 2.0 mm. The crystals were cubic or rectangular in shape, and silver gray or golden black in color. The properties of the respective crystals were explained in terms of lattice parameter, the composition, grown faces, dislocation density, the impurity contents of Ni and carbon, and Vickers microhardness.
