ABSTRACT
 
The potential and the limits of luminescence spectroscopy in the 2-20 µm infrared wavelength region for the investigation of narrow-gap semiconductors is discussed. Special attention is given to methodical aspects. An overview is given on the work done in the field of luminescence spectroscopy of narrow-gap II-VI and IV-VI materials.
