ABSTRACT Free convection experiments in water around the density maximum are carried out with the purpose of examining the features of the previously observed anomalies in this region. Temperature is measured as a function of time at three points of the axis of a vertical cylinder filled with water. Various effects are observed when the temperature range around the density maximum is narrowed in a non-symmetric fashion. Data are discussed and compared with a theoretical treatment of the phenomena which includes the anomalous region.
