ABSTRACT

Sialic acids play an important role in the various biological processes including the function as a ligand of the cell adhesion molecule, selectin. Although it was known that sialic acids exist from echinoderma to vertebrata, recent studies demonstrated that they also exist in cellular slime mold and insecta. In view of these recent findings, this review deals with the distribution and function of sialic acids.
