ABSTRACT Novel bis(anthraquinone-carbohydrate) hybrids were designed and synthesized as artificial DNA photocleavers. They showed very high DNA cleaving activities under irraditation with a long wavelength UV light without any additives. Furthermore, among them, bis(anthraquinone-carbohydrate) hybrid possessing two β-glycosidic bonds exhibited selective cytotoxicity against HeLa S3 cancer cells with the photoirradiation.
