ABSTRACT The reverse-flow reactor concept means much more than just the reactor design concept. Actually, it reflects the overall general approach to engineering of catalytic reactions. The efficiency of the reverse-flow reactors for performance of exothermic reaction with low or moderate heat effect, especially in the area of purification of waste gases with low content of admixtures, was emphatically confirmed by 30 years of successful commercial application in hundreds of installations worldwide. Though some stagnation has been observed in this area during the last decade, the reverse-flow concept still has significant potential for new developments and applications. The most significant progress may be achieved in the area of catalytic reverse-flow processes with sorption enhancement, which may be applied, in particular, for production of hydrogen and for performance of various selective oxidation reactions.
