ABSTRACT

In spite of the large consumption of Indomie noodle seasoning, especially among children of different developmental stages, knowledge of its possible genotoxicity is scarce. In this study, the evaluation of the genotoxic potential of Indomie noodle seasoning was carried out using the mouse bone marrow micronucleus assay, sperm morphology assay and sperm count. The seasoning was given to the mice via oral galvanization for a period of 10 consecutive days at concentrations of 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg seasoning/Kg body weight. Micronucleus analysis showed a concentration-dependent significant (p < 0.05) induction of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes across the treatment groups compared to the negative control. There was significant (p < 0.05) induction of abnormal sperm morphology such as folded, double tail, amorphous head and pin head sperms. The sperm count showed no significant decrease in the number of sperm cells across the treatment groups compared to the negative control. The study showed that Indomie noodle seasoning is genotoxic in both somatic and germ cells and therefore should be consumed with caution.
