ABSTRACT Methane combustion over Pd and Pt catalysts is an important subject. This paper reviews recent developments in the study of complete oxidation of methane at low temperatures over Pd and Pt noble-metal catalysts. The kinetic aspects of methane oxidation over these catalysts and methane activation behavior over PdO were reported. PdO is the active phase in Pd-based catalysts and metallic Pt is the active phase in Pt-based catalysts. The support, preparation method, and pretreatment can influence the performance of both metals. PdO is the best catalyst for methane oxidation. Adding a second metal or metallic compound such as NiO, Pt or RhO, can increase the dispersion of PdO, retard the growth of PdO in the reaction stream, and provide resistance to the poisoning effects of H 2S and SO 2.
