ABSTRACT

Stigma has long been recognized as a burden of people with movement disorders or mental illness. But the concept of stigma isn’t always clear, and it can be used in different ways. This article clarifies the different meanings of stigma and related concepts. Stigma is inadequately studied in neurologic conditions. Bipolar disorder is used as a model of diseases whose outcome is affected by stigma. Greater stigma is associated with reduced sense of self-esteem, increased levels of symptoms, reduced ability to engage in social activities, including employment, and reduced procreative potential. Stigma is an important and complex prognostic factor.
