Chemical engineering, although initiated by consultants, is now a mature science and one of the four major engineering disciplines. This paper discusses the history of chemical engineering. There is some controversy regarding the development of the important concept of unit operations from the 1890s onwards, both the USA and UK making claims. This controversy is an interesting historical parallel to the claims for creation of the industrial research laboratory.
