ABSTRACT

As described in Part 1 of this article, it is unclear how neurons with variable response properties and stochastic failures can reliably transmit and process information. In this Part, communication channels, such as 3:n, were identified in real cultured neuronal networks. Experimental results revealed that spikes are propagated in various temporal patterns from stimulated neurons using multichannel recording. Stimulated neurons which generate spikes could be classified by the spatio-temporal pattern of spikes at many neurons distant from stimulated neurons. The results support multiplex communication in the brain.
