ABSTRACT

As a result of growing global population and consumption, the amount of waste produced is increasing enormously. In particular, the high percentage of biodegradable household waste that ends up in landfills is a frequent environmental problem. One way to recycle bio-waste efficiently is through composting. This article introduces one of the new ways of processing bio-waste that is low-maintenance, virtually odourless, suitable for indoors and works as an alternative to conventional composting. This is called blatticomposting or composting with cockroaches. The average weight reduction of bio-waste by sludge composting is up to 95%, which is much higher than for example for vermicomposting or conventional composting. In addition to the actual disposal of the bio-waste, blatticomposting gradually produces so-called ‘blatticompost’, a mass made up of cockroach faeces and undecomposed waste residues. Blatticompost can be used as an organic fertiliser for direct soil application to plants or those grown in pots or in the garden. Despite a certain distrust of many people to keep cockroaches, this new method represents a very interesting and unpretentious alternative to composting that should be further investigated.
