ABSTRACT

SecA, a unique essential protein in bacteria, is an indispensable component of channel transporter for protein secretion and bacterial survival. Here, we employed CiteSpace to perform meta and visualization analysis of SecA to reflect the vast volumes of research based on the SecA-related published literatures. The hot spots of SecA research are focused on protein secretion, protein translocation, E. coli and virtual screening for inhibitors. The roles of SecA in post-translational secretion and more recently with ribosomes in co-translational membrane protein insertion and protein secretion have been the foci of extensive studies. The research history of SecA has gone from the discovery stage of basic sciences to the application stage. The latest trend is to have access to explore small molecule inhibitors of SecA and apply them to the development of novel antibiotics and anti-bacterial agents, all of which will provide a better perspective for further research on SecA and its inhibitors. The unique presence of SecA protein in bacterial cells offers the opportunity of employing SecA inhibitors as therapeutic agents in treating bacterial infection.
