ABSTRACT

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria (Mt) are tightly associated with a dynamic junction termed as the mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM). It provides not only a basic scaffold for crosstalk between the ER and mitochondria but have a pivotal role in different signaling pathways that allow rapid exchange of biological molecules to maintain cellular health. The current knowledge implies that MAM is not a simple connection between ER and Mt. It is involved in signal transmission and hence the miscommunication in MAM may be associated with several diseases, particularly those related to the so-called metabolic syndrome. With this in mind, further research is needed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying MAM regulation. In doing so, therapeutic intervention may be successfully implemented in the future. This article will provide an overview of the molecular mechanisms that govern MAM.
