The role of the genus Aerococcus as a pathogen in urinary tract infections is undisputed. The introduction of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in clinical microbiology laboratories has led to increased identification of Aerococcus spp. in human urine. The objectives of this study were to verify the real prevalence of the different species, to confirm some epidemiological data and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of this genus in our environment. A retrospective descriptive study of Aerococcus spp. isolates was conducted between May 2019 and February 2023 in the Microbiology Department of the University Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain. Aerococcus sanguinicola (n=33, 36.6%), Aerococcus urinae (n=30, 33.3%) and Aerococcus viridans (n=27, 30%) were identified. Antibiotic susceptibility was as follows: amoxicillin 96.7%, norfloxacin 51.7%, vancomycin 100%, ciprofloxacin 54.9%, nitrofurantoin 72% and meropenem 97.5%. Aerococcus spp. isolates are highly susceptible to penicillins, vancomycin and meropenem but there could be differences between the different species. Future research would include a thorough analysis of clinical records to corroborate these laboratory data.
