Biocomposite emulsion is an alternative coating material for a common type of packaging paper that can improve its moisture barrier properties and degradability in the normal environment (20-25 °C, 60% RH). The composite-based emulsion coating was prepared from nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). This cellulose was isolated from destarched cassava pulp. The second component of the coating material was purified by rice bran wax (RBW). NFC and RBW emulsion with different formulation was subsequently coated on the paper’s surface by a wet film applicator rod coating. Paper coated with 1 wt% NFC and 90 wt% RBW reduced the water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) by 21.92% and increased the contact angle from 93.54° of uncoated paper to 102.63°. The moisture barrier property of paper was improved by RBW-NFC composite emulsion coating. The presence of RBW in emulsion slightly limits the mechanical properties of the coated paper. The surface morphology of the coated paper was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The hydrophobicity features verify the green-based emulsion paper coating as a sustainable material.
