ABSTRACT The present study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial potential of some 2-(2-arylethenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles. The examined compounds were screened in vitro for antibacterial and antifungal activities against seven Gram-positive, six Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria and three fungi. The qualitative assessment of the susceptibility of different microbial strains to 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives was performed using disc diffusion method. The quantitative assay of the antimicrobial activity was carried out by broth microdilution method in order to determine MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration). The results of this study indicated that some of the title 1,3,4-oxadiazoles exhibited promising inhibition towards the tested strains of microorganisms. Among them, compound 2l displayed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against both bacteria and fungi.
