ABSTRACT Exhaustive exercise elicits systemic inflammatory responses, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully delineated. Herein, basics of inflammatory mediator cytokines and research findings on effects of exercise on inflammation are introduced. Then, the association between inflammatory responses and tissue damage is examined not only in overloaded skeletal muscle, but also in other internal organs. Furthermore, preventive countermeasures against the pathogenesis together with the possibility of interventions are discussed.
