ABSTRACT The study and characterization of corrosion products is an important means for understanding corrosion processes, looking for anti-corrosion methods and control procedures. To this end, the present paper presents a review on the nature and characteristics of the most common atmospheric corrosion products formed on ferrous materials. The text includes general chemical and physical features, thermochemica1 considerations, and mineralogical properties of oxyhydroxides, hydroxides, oxides, and miscellaneous constituents, such as goethite, lepidocrocite, magnetite, limonite, and so on.
