ABSTRACT

Restructuring-type adsorption, in which substrate surface atoms are replaced, migrated and rearranged, of Li atoms on low index surfaces of copper single crystal is reviewed. In such adsorption the restructuring occurs at room temperature, whereas overlayers are formed at low temperatures. A sequence of ordered structures (2x1)→(3x3)→(4x4) is formed on Cu(001) with increasing Li coverage within monolayer range. All of these structures are determined by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis. Similarly, a surface structure sequence (1x2)→(4x1)→(5x1)→(6x1)→(7x1)→(8x1) is found on Cu(110) with increasing Li coverage and the (4x1) structure is determined by LEED analysis. On Cu(111) the restructuring-type adsorption takes place at a nearly full monolayer and the surface exhibits a (2x2) structure. Details of the structure determination of these ordered surface-structures by LEED analysis are described.
