ABSTRACT

The hydroxide ion is regarded as a poor leaving group in solvolysis reactions in the ground state, requiring the assistance of acid for observable rates. Recently, we have documented a number of efficient photosolvolysis reactions where hydroxide ion is the formal leaving group, without the assistance of acid in most cases. This review summarizes work carried out in this area.
