ABSTRACT The alectrooxidation of naphthol derivatives in various electrolytic solutions was carried out. In basic electrolytic solutions auch as NaOH- containing methanol and (CH3)3N- containing acetonitrile solutions, insulating or semi-conducting polymer films of the poly(naphthalene oxide) structure were obtained. In neutral acetonitrile solution novel conducting polymer films could be elaborated from naphthols. The structure is predominantly constituted by alternating naphthalene and furan rings. On the basis of the results obtained and data from XPS and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy (MIRFTIRS method), the electropolymerization mechanism, completely different in the two media, were discussed.
