A survey of the chemistry of pyroglutamic acid and related compounds is presented. An attempt has been made in order to summarize the methods available for modifying the chemical structure of pyroglutamic acid. The references cited cover the period until mid-1990. Due to the large number of papers on this topic, this review has been restricted to the most important publications.
