ABSTRACT Intercalation of zirconium phosphates has been reviewed with emphasis on amines having ring systems as Intercalants. Uptake of amines in α-zirconium phosphate was studied by pH-titration method and chracterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, IR spectroscopy and thermal methods. Intercalation behaviour of cyclohexylamine, dI-phenylethylamlne, 2-phenyl-ethylamine and some azaheterocyclic compounds such as acridine and benzo[f]quinoline was described. The ethylamine intercalate took up Cu(II) ions and their coordination behaviour was examined by EXAFS and XANES. Between layers of γ-zirconium phosphate, α-diimines such as 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,9-dimethyl-l,10-phenanthroline as well as bipyridine and terpyridine were intercalated. The Intercalates took up Fe(III) ions and their chemical states within the layer region was Investigated by Moesbauer spectroscopy.
