ABSTRACT The ability to detect mechanosensory stimuli, such as substrate vibrations is an ancient evolutionarily trait found in many species. In insects, important sensory structures for mechanoreception are chordotonal organs. Different parameters, like location, size, attachment and embedding of the chordotonal receptors determine their sensory transduction properties. Besides the physical properties, the molecular composition, including the extracellular matrix is crucial for physiological function. In this mini-review, we will discuss recent advances in understanding mechanosensation, including the biomechanical properties of the extracellular matrix and the potential role of the cell adhesion molecule Fasciclin 2.
