ABSTRACT

There are many postulations about the causes of cancer. One of them is related to the controversial risk of developing cancer due to the use of antidepressants. In the current narrative review, we conducted a literature search in PubMed using the relevant search terms to identify studies or reports on the association of cancer with the use of antidepressants. We identified eleven published studies including one meta-analysis, one editorial review and one animal study in our search. The results showed that there was lack of evidence showing the increased risk of cancer with the use of antidepressants. In contrast, there were reports on the anticancer properties of antidepressants. In conclusion, based on current literature findings, the use of antidepressants do not seem to lead to increased risk of cancer. However, further large longitudinal studies are needed to examine the relationship between the usage of antidepressants and the risk of cancer.
