New methods of preparation of aromatic aldehydes and their acetals were developed by catalytic mono- and di(dehaloalkoxylation) of dihalomethylarenes using benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal, trialkyl orthoformates and anhydrous zinc chloride as the catalyst.
