This paper reports the characteristic features of the kinetics of electrochemical processes occurring at the Ni(II)/Ni(0) electrode in the deep eutectic solvent, ethaline, which is a typical representative of a new generation of low-temperature ionic liquids and consists of a eutectic mixture of choline chloride and ethylene glycol. The irreversible nature of the electrochemical processes of nickel electrodeposition/electrodissolution with a highly asymmetric potential barrier was revealed, the apparent transfer coefficients being equal to 0.309 and 0.255 for the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, respectively. To interpret the obtained data, the previously developed theoretical concept was applied, according to which during the electrodeposition of metals, the electric charge is transferred across the phase separation boundary by ions, not electrons, which results in a strong asymmetry of the potential energy barrier in the double layer.
