ABSTRACT

The present work aims at investigating pre-treatments for coil coated galvanised steel and for aluminium  alloys (AA2024-T3) based on the use of bis-silanes. The silanes tested are the Bis-1,2-[triethoxysilyl]ethane (BTSE) and the bis-[triethoxysilypropyl]tetrasulfide (BTESPT). The pre-treated substrates were characterised by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM). The corrosion behaviour of the pre-treated substrates was assessed by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the pre-treatments based on bis-slanes provide good corrosion protection of the subtrates. Painted substrates previously also revealed improved corrosion resistance and good adhesion properties.
