Besides the classical opioid family including proe-enkephalin, pro-dynorphin, pro-opiomelanocortin, pro-nociceptin derived peptides, a novel family considered as non classical opioid peptides including hemorphins, casomorphins, spinorphins has recently been demonstrated in the animal kingdom. Here we present an overview of this new family.
