ABSTRACT In recent years, procedures have been developed that are suitable for examining the initial acquisition of operant responding in rats under conditions where reinforcement is immediate or delayed. These procedures appear to provide a sensitive assay for examining drug effects on learning and for studying reinforcement delay as a modulator of drug action. The present manuscript describes recent research from our laboratory in which initial response acquisition with delayed and immediate reinforcement was examined and considers various assays for examining drug effects on learning.
