ABSTRACT Several caste-difference patterns are recognized in the swarm-founding polygynic wasps (Epiponini). Analysis of several species, combining morphometric data and other data from the literature, indicates morphological differences between castes may have evolved multiple times in the history of this group. In addition, the ancestral condition of this group is the absence of morphological and physiological caste differences, suggesting a high level of caste flexibility.
