ABSTRACT The crystallization and characterization of explosives and oxidizers, generally referred to as energetic materials, has gained more and more attention over the last decade. This development is related to the requirement of less sensitive energetic materials. In this review some general aspects of crystallization are explained after which the problems specific for energetic materials are illustrated by discussing several of the explosives and oxidizers nowadays in use. The review concludes with a future outlook on this area of research.
