We report a case of a patient treated for pneumoccocal pericarditis in which the use of the Binax NOW Streptococcus pneumoniae^® antigen assay performed on the pericardial fluid permitted a rapid diagnosis and adequate treatment, despite negative Gram stain and culture results.
