Basal bodies are microtubule organizing centers at the base of flagella and at the spindle poles during mitosis. Recent immunolocalization, inhibitor and knock down studies have shown that Giardia basal bodies contain several proteins with important functions in growth and differentiation. This review summarizes the current literature on Giardia basal bodies.
