ABSTRACT Transition metal carbonyl complexes adopt a range of molecular structures and this has led to the proposition of a number of bonding schemes to explain geometrical preferences. This article, focusing on group 8 pentacoordinate carbonyl complexes, brings together these bonding schemes for use as a means of comprehending structure and reactivity.
