ABSTRACT The photochemistry of lipophilic iodonium is reviewed. A main topic of this paper is the sensitization of such types of iodonium salts, which differ in several points from the photochemistry of the diphenyliodonium salt. Our results shows that the well-known kinetics of the sensitized photoinduced proton formation of iodonium salts must be extended by a CT-complex formation and by the photochemistry of this complex. Mostly, the observed photochemistry is the sum of the photo- chemistry of the CT-complex and of the free sensitizer. Using diphenylantracene (DPA) as sensitizer in heptane the photochemistry of the system is reduced to the photochemistry of the CT-complex. Our results show that the photochemistry of the sensitization determine the cationic crosslinking of vinyl- ether derivatives. Moreover, findings with DPA shows that the formed CT-complex photoinitiated the cross- linking reaction.
