ABSTRACT This article, with 159 references, gives information about 192 xanthones of naturally occurring in 17 genera and 84 species of the family Gentianaceae, isolated during the period 1821-2000. The significance of these groups of substances in chemotaxonomic studies of the family and the connection with the pharmacological activity and the ethnomedical uses of some species is shown.
