ABSTRACT

This review outlines the potential of bryophyte cell suspension cultures in the biotransformation of exogenous substrates. A set of different compounds and reaction types mainly divided into hydrolase and dehydrogenase reactions were investigated. We report on our results obtained with green cell suspension cultures of Marchantia polymorpha, Marchantia  plicata, Riccia fluitans and Asterella blumeana and biotransformations with Marchantia polymorpha described by other groups. A small to medium large scale production of useful chiral compounds is possible by this whole cell bionconversions.
