Interactions between exogenous DNA and sperm of vertebrates and invertebrates will be reviewed and the mechanisms will be examined. The possible applications of DNA uptake by sperm for gene transfer, retention of the transferred DNA and transmission of the foreign DNA to progeny will be discussed. The implication of DNA uptake by sperm in evolution and disease will be considered.
