ABSTRACT Zinc hexacyanoferrate(II) as an inorganic ion exchanger has been prepared in different ways by varying the mole ratios of mixed reagents. On the basis of exhaustive elemental analysis, I.R. spectra, and thermo gravimetric analysis, a tentative approach of the formula of these compounds was proposed. Ion exchange capacity, retention mechanism and values of diffusion coefficients (Di) of cesium ions on zinc ferrocyanides were determined. Values of distribution coefficients (kd) and separation factors (αxCs) for common metal cations were determined on prepared zinc ferrocyanides and complete adsorption of Cs+ ions were observed. Mixing the prepared fine particles of zinc ferrocyanides with suitable grain size of sand as a simple and new process, makes it possible to recommend these fine materials for separation and recovery of cesium ions using column chromatographic techniques.
