ABSTRACT The evolution of the field of pattern formation is briefly reviewed. The relevance of material science to this field is indicated, in particular the crystallization of amorphous alloys. Our experimental work on the crystallization of Ge:A1 amorphous alloys is reviewed. The successful of relevant models from the field of pattern formation to explain the revealed morphology are presented. The potential of amorphous alloy for studying the structure of solid-liquid interface in atomic scale by transmission electron microscopy is discussed.
