ABSTRACT Novel molecular-based materials with potential electronic and photo applications at molecular level are developed recently due to the large flexibility of molecular design. Much progress in basic research on opto-electronic properties has been made based on organic, polymer and organometallic solid materials, but less on metal complexes. The main aim of our recent research is to show whether it is possible to incorporate advantages of both organic and inorganic parts into the form of coordination compounds. In this paper we will briefly review some typical examples studied in our laboratory as conducting metallic complexes, molecular magnets and nonlinear optics. The syntheses of designed compounds for an organized functional system by donor-acceptor and supramolecular interaction are emphasized.
