ABSTRACT In the course of preparing a series of convenient building blocks for the construction of structurally complex molecules, the Michael reaction with nitro compounds as donors or acceptors plays a prominent role. In addition, asymmetric modifications of this procedure are of primary importance for the synthesis of pharmacologically active compounds. This article gives an overview of the methods using either chiral or achiral nitro compounds in asymmetric Michael reactions, including those in which chiral catalysts are used.
