ABSTRACT Polymerization of silicate anions in solutions usually takes place randomly. With the aid of organic quaternary ammonium ions, however, the polymerization is controlled, resulting in formation of silicate species with cage-like structures. In this review, formation of silicate species with the double eight-membered (Si4O4) structure (Si8O208-) and related compounds, and reactions of Si8O208- for the synthesis of its silyl derivatives and inorganic-organic hybrid porous materials are described.
